Staircase in Marbella
Tile stairs & vaults
In the historic center of Marbella, this compensated tile vault staircase integrates into a building with centuries of history, responding to the need to connect spaces with geometry and precision. The structure is formed by two linked vaults, the main one standing out for including a ‘twist’ that optimizes load distribution and ensures a fluid and comfortable passage.
The technical execution recovers traditional knowledge: the first layer, which remains exposed on the soffit, was made with traditional brick from Vélez-Málaga (Todobarro) and gypsum, built “in the air” without formwork or auxiliary supports. Successive layers were bonded with lime mortar, adjusting each piece manually to guarantee stability and exact curvature. The greatest construction challenge lay in the intersection between both vaults, a critical load-crossing point resolved with millimeter precision.
For the finishes, material coherence and sustainability were prioritized. The tread of the steps incorporates recycled clay recovered from the building itself, and the whole is finished with an aged lime stucco, slaked and decanted by hand by us. An intervention that combines craftsmanship, geometric calculation, and respect for the living trade.
