Staircase in Algarrobo
Tile stairs & vaults
In the municipality of Algarrobo (Málaga), we had the pleasure of shaping this self-supporting staircase using the traditional tile vault (Catalan vault) technique. The result combines visual lightness, surprising strength, and the warmth of natural materials, creating an almost “magical” structure that stands on its own.
The main challenge lay in the tight space, which required millimeter-precise setting out to define the guideline and starting points accurately. The execution followed the craft’s rapid method: a first layer (or “rosca”) of thin ceramic tile adhered with natural gypsum. The gypsum’s instant setting allowed the pieces to be fixed “in the air” without complex formwork.
To provide body and strength to the assembly, two additional layers were added (three in total), adhered with an aerial lime mortar formulated by us. Lime provides strength, flexibility, and breathability. Most notably, this staircase contains no metal reinforcement whatsoever; its stability relies purely on geometry and the compression of the ceramic. A testament to structural elegance and the enduring validity of traditional construction.
