What does Alqatifa mean?

Alqatifa (from the Arabic "alcatifa") refers to a layer of material or carpet. We are a technical architect and artisan workshop specialized in recovering natural coatings (lime, gypsum, earth) and vernacular techniques for contemporary architecture.

Our name, derived from the Arabic transcription of “alcatifa,” immerses us in the roots of Andalusi architecture.

In the context of architecture, Alqatifa evokes a fine carpet or rug, but also describes a layer of material, often composed of lime and sand, used as a coating or pavement. It is a tribute to the richness of traditional techniques and the harmonious convergence between natural building and ancestral practices.

Behind Alqatifa, we are Jesús Moral and María José Bustos, technical architects and founders of BEAM in 2017 in Vélez-Málaga. Our journey led us to explore and study the traditional techniques and materials that define the architecture of Axarquía and the Granada coast.

Immersed in traditional construction, our deep connection with lime was born from direct observation on sites. The void of knowledge about this material drove us to give life to Alqatifa, an extension of our dedication to natural coatings and sustainable construction.

At Alqatifa, we vindicate and promote the use of natural materials that evoke tradition, nature, and sustainability in contemporary construction. We are passionately dedicated to rescuing traditional mortars such as lime mortars, lime and gypsum blends, and earth mortars in both rehabilitation projects and new construction.

Our work encompasses research, innovation, and dissemination of coating techniques and natural materials in construction. In essence, we are committed to bringing our vision of sustainable, healthy, and tradition-respecting construction to life.
